International Growth

JUMP Math is receiving international attention and support.

Borough of Lambeth, London, UK

One of the most exciting developments at JUMP Math is the rapid adoption of our program occurring in the Borough of Lambeth, London, UK. In February 2005, John Mighton visited a Lambeth school and gave a three-day demonstration of the JUMP Math program. This caught the attention of Nikki Aduba, the Manager of Primary Strategy for the Lambeth board of education. Nikki was so impressed with the JUMP philosophy and John's demonstration that she organized a two-month pilot in twenty Lambeth schools for the following academic year.

The response to the program was overwhelmingly positive. Nikki noted that “there were extraordinary gains made across almost all schools.” As a result, the JUMP Math program will be phased into most elementary schools in Lambeth. For the 2006/2007 academic year, 5,000 students in Lambeth will have fun while learning math through JUMP! This is the first full-board adoption of the JUMP program and it has effectively doubled the program’s reach.

JUMP HI, Herschel Girls' Senior School, Cape Town, South Africa

This past summer JUMP Math had the great pleasure of welcoming the Herschel Girls’ Senior School in Cape Town, South Africa, as a program partner. Herschel is a top independent school in the Western Cape.

This project was named JUMP HI (Junior Undiscovered Maths Prodigies Herschel Initiative). In late June 2006, Steve Sherman presented the girls in Herschel Senior School with the concept of including a numeracy component to an existing literacy program with a disadvantaged school. A workshop was held for 30 Herschel volunteers on how to conduct themselves during the one-on-one sessions, the power of praise and how to build the self esteem of young children. The hour-and-a-half workshop demonstrated the power of positivity and how young minds can be boosted with carefully chosen words and a positive attitude. The following week, a busload of 40 students from the disadvantaged school arrived on the Herschel campus. The JUMP HI program was launched on August 1, 2006 with the commencement of the first classes.  Each week, the participants grow and learn together. They are committed to keeping a journal of their experiences, documentation of their results and to making recommendations on how to improve the program for future implementations.

The goal of JUMP HI is to create a viable model that is well-run and sustainable so that it can be replicated by other schools around South Africa. This is a project that will make a meaningful contribution to math education in South Africa.

"I have tried the JUMP approach with my students when introducing long division and coordinate geometry. It is amazing how quickly the students caught on to both concepts. They became confident and capable mathematicians. I will definitely include more of this approach in my teaching, as the students look forward to math, knowing they are going to succeed."
