JUMP Math workshops in B.C. will be led by Liz Barrett, our Manager of Teacher Support and First Nations Outreach. Liz has been working with JUMP Math for many years and is passionate about working with teachers, parents and tutors, especially those from First Nations communities. She is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about JUMP Math and its effect upon not only students but also teachers and parents. Liz is more than willing to spend time answering your questions and guiding you in the right direction.

If you wish to implement the JUMP Math program effectively, we strongly recommend that you attend a training session.

 

How to Reach and Teach Every Child (Introduction)

Focus Audience: Teachers of Grades 1–8, Learning Assistance Specialists, and EAs with little or no experience with JUMP Math.

JUMP Math’s Professional Development (PD) session is designed to give you the tools and skills to effectively implement the program in your classroom or school.  In this workshop participants will:

  • Learn about the JUMP Math program, its philosophy and development
  • Examine their own comfort levels with mathematics and mathematics teaching
  • Discuss the importance of teachers' mathematical knowledge
  • Observe and critique a JUMP Math lesson
  • Become familiar with JUMP Math's teacher and student materials
  • Learn about anticipating ‘pitfalls’, task analysis and other JUMP Math teaching strategies
  • Discuss practical strategies
  • Have opportunities to share ideas and network with colleagues
  • Including an introduction to the Smart Lesson Materials

Taking it to the Next Level (Level 2)

Get the most out of the JUMP Math Program and take it to the next level. You will be guided through the art of scaffolding difficult concepts in math teaching. We will look at how to develop bonus questions/challenging students who finish quickly. We will examine teaching strategies and activities that will help you in developing solid problem solving skills in young people.  In this workshop participants will:

  • learn how to get the most out of the math lessons in the JUMP Teacher’s Guides
  • develop a deeper understanding of guided practice and guided discovery
  • learn ways to increase students' mathematical vocabulary
  • learn how to develop bonus questions in order to challenge and motivate students
  • learn Data Management for multi-grade groups
  • the art of scaffolding difficult concepts
  • expand knowledge of and improve effectiveness in teaching problem-solving strategies
  • discover the Joys of Geometry.
  • learn strategies using money to develop understanidn in muliplication, long division and decimals
  • Math magic.
  • using the website to access free teacher resources.
  • developing Mental Math fluency
  • teaching combined-grade classes (e.g. how to align the books and teach to both grades in the same lesson)

Some Specific Topics

  • Approach to Measurement specifically perimeter and area.
  • Incorporating Money to teach key concepts in Math – from basic number sense to exploring  Decimals
  • Approaches to Geometry
  • Introduction to the Smart Lesson Materials
  • Using the Teacher's Guide and website effectively
  • Which topics to focus on more if time is short to complete the workbooks
  • Teaching combined-grade classes (how to align the books/teach to both grades in the same lesson

Discounts and Payment

When you register, you have the opportunity to order one set of grade-specific student Assessment and Practice books at the discounted price of $14 plus GST and one printed, binder-ready version of a grade-specific Teacher Resource package at the discounted price of $65 plus GST.  This discount is only available up to one week before the workshop.

We recommend that you pay online when you register. However, if you do pay by cheque, please indicate which workshop you are attending and MAIL it to:  JUMP Math, 1 Yonge Street, Suite 1006, Toronto, ON M5E 1E5. Please do not bring your cheque to the workshop.

 

Institutes

JUMP Math Institutes are intensive two-day workshops designed to give participants a deeper understanding of how to teach math effectively. Institutes are held in cities across Canada during the Summer, and occasionlly in the Fall.
