Are you a teacher who needs support to implement JUMP Math as a key classroom resource? If you work with students from high or special needs communities across Canada, you can apply for free classroom materials and teacher professional development through the National Book Fund. The National Book Fund is designed to assist teachers in high-need communities across Canada improve the math achievement of their students through implementation of the JUMP Math resource in their classroom. It is made possible by the generous support of lead sponsor TD Bank Group and other donors.
Who Can Apply?
The National Book Fund supports teachers at schools in communities across Canada. This fund is not available outside the country. Applications for the National Book Fund are invited from teachers who are committed to the following:
- the JUMP Math philosophy and approach to math education
- using JUMP Math as a key math resource in their classroom
- JUMP Math professional development, and
- evaluating the effectiveness of the JUMP Math program in their classroom
Only complete submissions will be reviewed and evaluated. A completed submission consists of two parts:
- Teacher Application Form by each interested teacher
- School Application Form by the principal or vice-principal
*Only one School Application Form is required per school.
Upon review of the teacher and school applications, JUMP Math will determine which teachers will receive National Book Fund support.
Benefits to Book Fund Awardees
Through the National Book Fund, selected teachers will receive all of the student and teacher resources necessary to successfully implement JUMP Math in their classroom. These include:
- A set of JUMP Math Assessment & Practice books (Parts 1 and 2) for each student
- A Teacher Resource (lesson plans, answer keys, unit tests) for up to two grades being taught in the classroom
- SMART Lesson Materials for up to two grades being taught in the classroom
- Professional Development
- Support from JUMP Math
Familiarity with JUMP Math teacher and student resources makes teachers’ and students’ experiences with the program more productive and rewarding, therefore JUMP Math professional development is an important part of the National Book Fund award.
- Teachers who have not participated in a JUMP Math professional development session within the past two years (since January 1, 2015) are required to complete an in-person session by July 31, 2017.
- Teachers who live in geographic regions where in-person professional development sessions are not offered will be offered a webinar.
- Teachers who have completed a professional development session (in-person or webinar) since January 1, 2015 are welcome to participate in a free professional development session of their choice.
Please note that National Book Fund awardees cannot transfer their training to another teacher.
PD sessions will be held in larger centres in every region and consist of one one-day session or two half-day sessions during May, June, and July 2017. The time, date, and location of each workshop will be announced as soon as dates are available. Please note that training must be completed no later than July 31, 2017. If training is not completed by this deadline, the award will be reallocated to a teacher on the Book Fund waiting list.
JUMP Math is committed to evidence-based practice and providing an effective program for teachers and students. Therefore, teachers who participate in the National Book Fund must commit to the evaluation component of the program. Completing the surveys and student evaluations are mandatory. All information is kept strictly confidential and only aggregate data will be reported. Program evaluation consists of:
- Completion of a teacher background and attitude survey (September 2017 and May 2018) and administration of student surveys (in September 2017 and May 2018). Some teachers will also be asked to administer student math tests in September 2017 and May 2018
- Completion of a short teacher survey in June 2018 to provide feedback on the program to JUMP Math

National Book Fund applicants are selected according to the following criteria:
- Enthusiasm about using JUMP Math
- Commitment to using JUMP Math as a key resource through the 2017-2018 school year
- Commitment to meeting the Professional Development requirements
- Commitment to completing surveys and student assessments
- Submission of a school application by the school's principal
Note: Support is limited to a maximum of 3 years.
