FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about JUMP Math.

Show or hide the answer What materials do I need to use the JUMP program with my child?

Regardless of age or grade level, the Fractions Unit should be the first unit taught in the JUMP Math program.

After successfully completing this unit, you should proceed to the grade-specific workbooks, which match your child's current level of proficiency. In other words, if he/she is in Grade 6 but is operating at a Grade 3 level, then they should start with Workbook 3. We suggest purchasing one set of workbooks (Parts 1 & 2) at the appropriate grade level.

JUMP has strategically decided not to name our workbooks by grade, so as to preserve students' self-confidence.

Show or hide the answer How do I know which workbook to buy?

Our workbooks correspond with the Grade levels in Ontario.  For example, Workbook 4 is for students in Grade 4.  If you child is working at or at or a little behind grade level, we suggest you purchase the corresponding books, as they contain review material that goes back 1-2 years.  If your child is behind 2 or more years, we recommend purchasing a workbook that is 1-2 levels below.

Show or hide the answer Do I need to order the Teacher's Manual?

No, the Teacher's Manual contains materials geared to classroom teachers (activities, blackline masters, etc.).  Some parents like to have this as well, but for working at home, the workbooks are sufficient.

Show or hide the answer Which grades does JUMP Math cover?

Currently, our workbooks cover Grades 3-8, with Grade 1 & 2 materials scheduled for release later in 2007.

Show or hide the answer Does JUMP Math offer materials at the high-school level?

At this point, JUMP Math only covers the elementary curriculum.  However, high school students needing remedial help can benefit from the Grade 7 & 8 workbooks, as well as the Fractions Unit.

Show or hide the answer How do I order the workbooks?

All of our materials are ordered through the University of Toronto Press.  For more information, please visit our Order Information Page.

Show or hide the answer Do you offer training sessions for parents?

At this time, JUMP does not offer specialized training for parents. For an understanding of our method, we suggest reading the Fraction Unit's accompanying Teacher's Manual.

Show or hide the answer Who can teach JUMP Math?

No prior mathematical background is required to teach from the JUMP materials. Teaching requires patience and a sense of confidence in the ability of the student. Many adults who once struggled with math rediscover the subject through teaching. Those who have experienced the frustration of struggling with math, can emphathize with the student and often become the best teachers.
