Recipients of the John Mighton Outstanding Volunteer Award
2007: Kirk Vandezande
Kirk has been a volunteer with JUMP Math for over 6 years. Over the years Kirk’s dedication and commitment to JUMP has been unwavering and is a major reason why he has been chosen for the award. Kirk has volunteered as a tutor, board of director, and with the JUMP Math office.
Here are some excerpts from Kirk's nomination letters:
“From the first day I met Kirk, he has gone above and beyond to provide support to anyone who is interested in learning about JUMP Math or seeing it in action”
“Kirk willingly went beyond the basic expectations. One year at the request of a mother, he tutored her son through the summer months. Ultimately, her son did well at math and experienced a positive change in his attitude towards math,school, and his own responsibilities.”
“His passion for young people is inspiring! Students gravitate to him at Rose Avenue because he always includes a mathematical magic trick in his tutoring sessions.”
“Many tutors come for a year or two, and then leave. Kirk is the only one that I can think of who has been with our program since it started. Tuesday mornings will not be the same next year without Kirk's smile, skill, and enthusiasm.”
2006: Stephen Hong
Stephen has been volunteering with JUMP Math – both in front of and behind the scenes - since 2003. From tutoring in numerous classrooms in several schools to providing valuable feedback on the program, proofreading the workbooks with super-human attention to detail, and photographing key JUMP events for posterity, Stephen’s contribution to the organization has been tremendous! We are is truly lucky to have him on our team.
2005: Richard Michael
The inaugural winner of the John Mighton Volunteer of the Year Award, Richard was a volunteer behind the scenes with JUMP from its inception until 2005. From the creation of the first JUMP website, to the establishment and administration of its early computing systems, Rich's contribution to the organization has been immeasurable.
