Approach to Instruction

JUMP Math is primarily intended to be used by teachers in the classroom. JUMP Math is a complete package of resources intended to cover the curricula for kindergarten to grade 8. Professional development is also offered to teachers wishing to add to their teaching credentials. While JUMP Math is a mainstream set of classroom materials for use in schools, it is very flexible and can be used as a support in after-school tutoring by schools and community organizations, as well as by parents at home.

JUMP Math is dedicated to helping children succeed at, and enjoy, learning math. There is a strong causal link between a child's academic success and his or her future contribution to society. We strive to increase children’s chances of success, to reduce socio-economic disparities, to engender a sense of belonging and, most importantly, to endow voiceless children with opportunity.

Philosophy

There are several core beliefs at the foundation of the JUMP Math philosophy:

  • New intellectual abilities can emerge suddenly in even the most challenged student from a series of small advances, just as a chemical solution can change colour with the addition of a single drop of reagent. More than any other subject, math is a tool for adding, in a methodical and effective way, the drops of knowledge that will transform a student.
  • This non-linear potential can only be nurtured if students are confident and attentive. Teachers must pay attention to the psychology of the classroom to make sure that everyone is included, involved and participating, and supported with responsive instruction, praise and encouragement. Children who don't believe they can succeed will never do so. The JUMP Math approach starts with a confidence building exercise that has demonstrably changed children's perceptions of their abilities. 
  • By adopting the methods and principles of JUMP Math, schools can teach mathematics to a higher standard, without leaving students behind, and in a cost-effective manner.
  • There will always be differences between students, but we don’t need to exaggerate or highlight them by setting up unnecessary hierarchies.  By using materials and methods that minimize differences, teachers can cover more of the curriculum and can narrow or close the wide gap in student performance that exists in most classrooms.
  • Teachers will only succeed in helping all levels of student when they know how to determine what their students know, how to reduce concepts into the most basic elements of perception and understanding, and how to extend ideas in a way that is engaging while taking into account the student's readiness to move forward.

Structured Inquiry

We call the approach used in JUMP Math "Structured Inquiry".

In JUMP Math lessons, students practice inquiry in manageable concepts. They are expected to discover and understand mathematical concepts by answering questions and working through challenges on their own, but they are also provided with a good deal of rigorous guidance and support from the teacher. This balance of discovery with feedback, scaffolding, assessment and explicit instruction is now well supported by research

In a JUMP Math lesson, the teacher asks a series of Socratic questions and gives students incrementally harder challenges and activities, with immediate assessment and feedback. The JUMP Math Teacher Resource contains detailed lesson plans that show teachers how to deliver this kind of lesson for the full curriculum. At the end of a lesson, the student uses the accompanying Assessment and Practice (AP) Books.

Teacher Resources are the Heart of JUMP Math

JUMP Math is not primarily an Assessment and Practice Book program: the heart of the program is in the Teacher Resources and our Professional Development.

In JUMP Math lessons, students are not passive recipients of knowledge but are actively engaged in generating their own knowledge and understanding.  However, our lesson plans take account of the fact, now well established in cognitive science, that children are easily overwhelmed by too much new information, require practice to consolidate skills and concepts, and benefit from immediate assessment and careful scaffolding of ideas.

The JUMP Math lessons also help teachers minimize unnecessary hierarchies in the classroom. When all students see that they are capable of doing well, they are less anxious and more engaged, and their brains work more efficiently.
