What grades does JUMP Math cover?

Does JUMP Math offer resources for high school?

Some high schools are using JUMP Math elementary program materials for remediation, benefiting from our Grades 7 and 8 Assessment and Practice (AP), as well as Getting Ready for JUMP Math: Introductory Unit Using JUMP Math. JUMP Math has future plans to develop offerings for Grades 9 to 12, but these will not be ready for at least two years.

What materials do I need in order to use the JUMP Math program in my class?

You will need our Teacher Resource, which consists of lesson plans, answer keys, unit tests, curriculum guides, and Blackline Masters. This is the “engine” of the JUMP Math Program. More information on the Teacher Resources can be found here.

Student Assessment & Practice (AP) books are designed to be used with the JUMP Math lesson plans. These books provide a range of practice for students and additional assessment options for the teacher. Sample pages can be found here.

If you have a SMARTBoard, we also strongly suggest that you use our SMARTBoard Lesson Materials, which align perfectly with the lesson plans provided in JUMP Teacher Resources. JUMP Math SMART Lesson Materials can also be used with a computer and a standard projector.

You will also require some commonly available manipulatives, such as; Base Ten materials, dice, counters, interlocking cubes, geo-boards, pattern blocks, 3-D solids and playing cards.

What is the rationale behind the Confidence Building Units?

The purpose of the Confidence Building Units is to build confidence and perseverance, help children develop their ability to attend to lessons, and motivate them to enthusiastically engage in a positive learning environment. Students will also learn to recognize patterns, select appropriate procedures and carry out complex sequences of steps: these are all foundational skills for more complex, conceptual work. However, these units should not be considered as deep instruction on Fractions or Number Sense. Both are covered in depth in both the Teacher Resources and Assessment & Practice books.

It is very important to read the introduction and closely follow the Teacher’s Manual for the Confidence Building Units. You should spend only one to two weeks on the introductory unit, and it is important to tailor the final test to include only the lessons covered during that time.

Does JUMP Math align with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in the US?

JUMP Math Common Core Editions have been meticulously crafted designed to conform to both the letter and spirit of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.

Does JUMP provide tools to diagnose areas of strengths and weaknesses?

The goal of the JUMP Math program is to have all students working at grade level, or above, and the expectation is that all students work out of their grade-appropriate resources. For this reason Part 1 of the resources includes up to two grade levels of review. If it is thought that students may be further behind, an informal diagnostic can be created using exercises contained in the JUMP resources. The simplest way to begin to assess knowledge levels and gaps in understanding is to choose up to ten questions from the first Number Sense unit at the age appropriate grade level and have students work through questions independently. Students who answer over 50% of the questions correctly are working at grade level. Analyzing errors will help to pinpoint areas of weakness for which remediation is required.

How can teachers assess and report on student achievement?

Included in the JUMP Teacher Resources are extensive unit tests that align with the strands of the Common Core Standards. With some minor adjustments and/or chunking by teachers, these tests can be used for both pre and post unit evaluation. They are designed to demonstrate student understanding and precisely where students require additional practice.

Very weak students shouldn’t necessarily be expected to do exercises that are harder or conceptually deeper the first part of the year. If they can demonstrate some success at a basic level in a topic, the teacher can move on and revisit the topic later in the year when the student is more confident and has a better grounding in the basics. Frequent review is essential for these students.

How is mastery determined in JUMP Math?

Rapid, frequent assessment is woven right into the fabric of the JUMP Math lesson plans, to help teachers to know right away when additional remediation is required before moving on. Each method of practice gives teachers the chance to verify that students understand the work that is expected of them. Teachers then have a second opportunity to assess, as students work in their Assessment & Practice books. In addition to cementing what students have learned in the lesson, each page in the AP book is a diagnostic that will tell the teacher if students have mastered the material. Students who have trouble completing the AP exercises independently should be given extra coaching.

How do you use JUMP Math in a split or multi-grade setting?

It is important to note the sequential nature and ample review built into the JUMP Math lessons and units. This format provides teachers with several options to address student needs in multi-level classrooms, as well as in single grades where the ability range is wide. In planning to teach a given concept, teachers should compare the lessons from each of the applicable grade level Teacher Resources and draw elements from each to teach one lesson.

In double grade classrooms, if the students in the lower grade are strong, the teacher could teach the whole class at the higher grade level. The teacher could use only the student Assessment & Practice books from the higher grade level, but should still check the JUMP materials from the lower grade to make sure that no essential prerequisite knowledge is missed.

I like JUMP Math, but my school board requires me to use a different textbook. How can I integrate JUMP Math into my classroom?

JUMP Math’s US Common Core Edition has been designed to meet the requirements of the Common Core Standards in the United States. Designed from the ground up using our proven classroom math curriculum, JUMP Math’s methods and resources will help educators and parents implement the US Common Core State Standards.

Isn’t JUMP Math a tutoring program/remedial program/for kids that are behind?

JUMP Math began as a tutoring methodology designed specifically for children with wide gaps in learning (JUMP Math still produces materials for this sector, available to non-profit agencies). However, teachers soon began to share how effective they were finding our program in their classrooms, and encouraged us to create a full program of JUMP Math classroom materials. This was a multi-year undertaking that was only fully completed for Grades 1 to 8 in 2011. Research has shown that JUMP Math lifts all boats, closing the gap for struggling students, even as it raises the bar for those who are already doing well.) Because the strength of our approach lies in breaking down concepts into small, manageable chunks and teaching each one systematically and supportively, JUMP Math is easily applied to the classroom setting to support children with a wide range of ability. The resources are comprehensive enough for any committed and communicative adult to teach math.

How do I know JUMP Math works?

Research on the efficacy of JUMP Math can be found here, including information on a randomized controlled trial, which found that children taught using JUMP progressed at twice the rate of children using one of Canada’s two leading programs. I am concerned that using JUMP Math will slow my faster students down to the speed of the weakest student in the classroom.

JUMP Math provides progressively more challenging extension and bonus questions in the Teacher Resource lesson plans. These extension and bonus questions keep faster students engaged and deepening their math knowledge, but are familiar enough that children who are slower at the outset, see that they can aspire to solve them. Research shows that all children benefit from using JUMP Math, including children who are already progressing rapidly. All children in a JUMP Math class build their self-confidence and are given plenty of opportunities to show what they know. Progress accelerates as increasing numbers of students begin to understand and participate at a higher level, which benefits even the ablest students. That is due to both the depth of the JUMP Math program, and because the JUMP Math program harnesses the excitement of the class to create a superior learning environment for all.

What JUMP Math materials do I need to use with my child?

We suggest that you begin with the JUMP Math Confidence Building Unit that is suitable to your child, available here. After your child successfully completes this unit, they should move on to the grade-specific resources that match their current level of math proficiency. Part 1 of each grade level of JUMP Math materials contains review going back 2 grade levels. Therefore, you should avoid using materials that are more than two grade levels ahead of your child’s current capabilities. Going back to where a child can find real traction is the quickest way to get them moving ahead in a sustainable manner.

Can I use JUMP at Home for Homeschooling?

JUMP at Home is a useful resource for parents who wish to provide their children with extra review or enrichment, however, for Homeschooling, we suggest using the classroom resources; the Teacher Resource and the student Assessment & Practice books.

Some homeschooling parents currently use JUMP At Home, however this book does not cover the full WNCP or Ontario curricula, or include the JUMP Math lesson plans, activities, games and additional assessment provided in the classroom materials.

What is JUMP At Home?

JUMP At Home is a workbook to be used to support and remind students of concepts and to give them extra practice. For example, these books could be used over the summer to keep skills fresh and during the school year for review. JUMP At Home is NOT recommended for homeschooling or school classroom situations.

Do I need to order the Teacher Resources?

Homeschooling Parents should order and use the Teacher Resources, which provide clear lessons, essential assessment, games and activities.

Parents who are not Homeschooling but simply trying to support their child’s math learning, may also benefit from using the Teacher Resource. Reading the lessons will provide critical background for parents in how to explain concepts. Having children work only in the Assessment & Practice books will result in only paper and pencil work rather than a more varied and balanced approach.

The JUMP Math program is designed to be taught in a classroom or individualized learning environment. JUMP Math is not a workbook program and we do not recommend that students use only the workbooks. Lesson plans are an essential part of the program and the Assessment & Practice books alone will not enable your children to obtain the deep understanding or appreciation of math that comes from following the lesson plans.

Do you offer training sessions for parents?

JUMP Math periodically offers sessions for parents of school children, or homeschooling parents, where there is sufficient demand. However, parents can also participate in our teacher professional development sessions, both online and in person. To understand our method, we suggest you begin by reading the introduction to the Teacher Resource.

Who can teach JUMP Math?

JUMP Math program materials and lesson plans have been specifically designed to enable all people to excel at teaching elementary and middle school level math. What is required is a positive attitude and the willingness to follow the JUMP lesson plans with fidelity. Many adults who once struggled with math rediscover the subject through teaching, and we find that those who have experienced the frustration of struggling with math can empathize with their students and often become the best teachers.

If you already own a Teacher Resource, you will find the answer keys, unit tests, unit test answers and curriculum correlations for both WNCP and Ontario, in the back of Part 2 of the resource.
