Introduction to JUMP Math
Get introduced to the JUMP Math approach and gain the tools and skills to implement the program effectively in your classroom or school. In this workshop you will gain:

Meet Our Outreach Team!
Shonté, born and raised in Harlem, New York knew at the age of six that she wanted to be a teacher. The road getting there was not easy however she did it. At ten years old, Shonté taught all her siblings how to read, write and perform mathematics. They were all ready for kindergarten when the time came. During her school years, Shonté would say she was an average math student, however she always enjoyed recognizing how math presented itself in the world around her. After completing her educational studies at Syracuse University, Shonté embarked on a journey to share her love for learning with the children of New York City. It was during her eighth year as a teacher when she discovered that mathematics, if taught well, brings complete joy to students. That’s when she discovered JUMP Math. Learning that JUMP Math reduces the mathematical fear and anxiety that exists within children and teachers; she knew she had to be part of a team doing something so extraordinary. So now as the full-time Outreach Manager and Teacher Support of the Northeast Region, Shonté will work with teachers, principals, and students in understanding and developing a love for mathematics through JUMP Math. Shonté’s favorite number is 9 because she was born on the 9th day of the 9th month in ‘81 (8 +1 =9). Contact Shonté.
Ceil learned early in her teaching career that building students’ self-confidence is one of the most important mediating factors in learning. In fact, ninth grade Physical Science in her classroom always started the year with a set of easily accessible experiential activities that made students feel like science was interesting, relevant, and most importantly, easy! After spending many years as a teacher, tutor, researcher, program developer, coach, and mom, she had the opportunity to learn about JUMP math and see it in action in fourth grade classrooms in high-poverty New York City schools as part of an evaluation of the program. After interviewing students and teachers, a common theme emerged. JUMP Math was building growth mindsets among the majority of the teachers and students in the study. Teachers and students were finding out that they loved math! After meeting John, Liz, and the rest of the team at JUMP Math and reading John’s books, she knew that this research was very important and that the JUMP Math approach could change lives. As part of the team at The Center for Research and Reform in Education, part of the School of Education at Johns Hopkins University, Ceil has continued to work with JUMP Math to grow its presence in the U.S. education marketplace through high quality research, outreach, professional development, and implementation support for schools. Amy embarked on her teaching adventures in 2001. After teaching everything from English as a second language to dance in the public schools, she eventually became an elementary classroom teacher in N. California. As a classroom teacher, Amy used JUMP and saw firsthand how the lesson structure helps teachers engage even the most reluctant learners. She saw an opportunity to expand her reach by joining the JUMP Math team in 2012. Since then, Amy has developed her skills as a total renaissance woman on a mission to help teachers and students improve their confidence and skills in math. For a few years, Amy left JUMP Math for a stint in a private publishing company only to find that it is more fulfilling and inspiring to work for JUMP with its caring, mission driven, skillful leadership. Teaching is in Christina's DNA. Her father and mother were teachers as well as son Zane and now both daughter-laws. When she resigned as a 5th grade classroom teacher of 25 years in June 2016, she felt incredibility blessed to be offered a position with JUMP Math as a Teacher Support/Outreach Manager. For the past five years, she experienced first hand how this math curriculum ignited a passionate flame in her students towards seeing the world through math. Some students begged to stay in at recess to work on JUMP Math problems. Christina's goal is to work with teachers around Washington state to develop math support that is meaningful and relevant to all users and future users of JUMP Math. She wants students in her area to learn to love math and be successful like her classroom students experienced. When she is not focused on creating and giving presentations, Christina enjoys her new baby granddaughter, international travel (2016: South Africa, 2015-16 Europe), the Seattle art scene, hiking steep mountain ranges, long bike rides and walking her three dogs daily: Sadie (15), Maya (10) and Barkley (2).
